KDE’s next desktop, Plasma 6.8, is due on October 14, 2026. This week’s standout lets KDE’s new Union system style traditional QtWidgets apps. The latest report covers the details.
Union is KDE’s push for one consistent way to theme apps. Until now it mostly targeted modern QML and Kirigami interfaces, but it now reaches QtWidgets apps for the first time. That could finally give old and new KDE apps a shared look, though it’s early and full of visual glitches and known bugs.
The built-in RDP server gains several upgrades. It can now scale image quality to the available bandwidth, aiming for a steadier frame rate when the connection wobbles. KDE also trimmed screen-casting latency by one frame in Plasma and KWin, and that win reaches RDP too, so remote sessions feel snappier.
KWin picks up graphics gains as well. Full-screen content should use fewer resources and run more efficiently on Intel and NVIDIA GPUs, even with HDR, ICC color profiles, or Night Light enabled. KWin also adds HDR support via the HLG transfer function, and Spectacle now drops the alpha channel from screenshots with no transparent pixels, shrinking those files.
A batch of smaller touches is coming too. A four-finger touchpad gesture will trigger the Overview effect, and first-time enterprise Wi-Fi connections jump straight to the credentials page. The clipboard also handles secrets better, so if an app marks copied text as secret, it says so instead of quietly hiding the entry.
The System Tray gets two fixes. Clicking an icon to open its widget no longer makes the icon vanish while the popup is open. Disabled tray widgets also release their memory immediately, rather than waiting for a restart.
Discover behaves more sensibly with packages, offering to install DEB files only on systems that support them. KDE also fixed a hang in update checks. It struck when the Snap backend was installed but had nothing to upgrade.
Some fixes land in Plasma 6.7.5 too. One stops crashes in non-KDE apps when closing certain dialogs, while another repairs sluggish pointer movement in virtual machines using non-accelerated drivers. HDR rendering with an active ICC profile improves as well.
The work extends beyond Plasma itself. KDE Frameworks 6.30 makes in-window Kirigami dialogs easier to see in dark themes. System Monitor graphs will also use tabular numerals, so figures line up neatly.
KDE Gear 26.12 is starting early too. It includes a QML rewrite of the System Settings Proxy page. The page looks about the same, but now runs on Plasma Mobile.
