KDE has shared another batch of features headed to Plasma 6.8, the next desktop release due on October 14, 2026. The changes touch responsiveness, accessibility, audio, and performance. KDE laid them out in its latest “This Week in Plasma” report. Here’s what’s new so far.
Auto-hide panels feel much snappier now. KDE cut the hide delay from 500 milliseconds to just 50. A panel now slips away almost as soon as your pointer leaves it.
System Settings search improves for non-English users. In Plasma 6.8, English keywords work alongside your own language. Search “mouse” on a French system, and the “souris” page still shows up.
The Autostart page gains a handy option too. You can now switch entries off temporarily instead of deleting them. That makes it easier to manage what launches at login.
The lock screen picks up several changes. When several login methods exist, you can pick the one you want. Each method also gets a cleaner interface. KDE notes the feature is still experimental. There’s no graphical way to configure every authentication method yet.
KWin now blocks resolutions that are too low to use safely. That prevents a desktop you can’t read or repair. KDE also tidied the alignment of lock-screen buttons. The fix helps most in languages where translations shift the layout.
Automatic brightness gets smarter as well. The system remembers your manual tweaks. It then learns the levels you prefer under different lighting. Over in Discover, the app now remembers if you already marked a review as useful. It also stops you from rating the same review twice.
Audio sees a few refinements. The standalone Audio Volume widget popup is now large enough to show everything at once. You no longer have to scroll right away. Error messages during microphone testing are clearer too.
The microphone tester also changed under the hood. It used to force a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Now it follows whatever rate your system runs. That helps people who do audio production.
Several smaller UI touches round things out. Non-default options on the Remote Desktop page are now highlighted. Cursor feedback effects stay visible near screen edges. Breeze styling improves for GTK 4 app menus and window borders. And KWin’s GPU-reset notifications now cover every GPU, not just the primary one.

Performance improves in a few places. Discover’s background update notifier uses far less memory while checking for updates. Plasma should also start a little faster, since it skips extra work when loading wallpapers. KWin’s screenshot path is quicker and lighter. And screen recordings should look smoother on high-refresh-rate displays.
KDE fixed several bugs as well. Screen readers can now reach the whole Activities sidebar. A clipboard bug that blocked copying multiple cells between LibreOffice Calc sheets is resolved. The Remote Desktop tray icon now disappears properly when a connection drops unexpectedly. And two rare cases where the Audio Volume widget showed the wrong panel icon are fixed.
